Vijayadashami (Dussehra):
“Vijayadashami – The Festival of Victory and Learning”

Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, is one of the most auspicious and widely celebrated festivals in the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Observed on the tenth day of the Navaratri festival, it symbolizes the victory of good over evil and marks the triumph of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. The day holds great cultural and spiritual importance, with devotees performing Ayudha Puja (worship of tools and instruments) and Shami Puja, signifying respect for knowledge, work, and nature. Families also celebrate Vidyarambham (Aksharabhyasam), the traditional ceremony where young children are initiated into learning by writing their first letters. Temples and communities across the region organize vibrant Durga Alankarams, cultural performances, and processions, reflecting the rich heritage and devotion associated with this festival. Vijayadashami is also considered an auspicious time to begin new ventures, symbolizing success, wisdom, and the eternal triumph of righteousness.
Diwali:
“Diwali – The Festival of Lights and Prosperity”
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most joyful and widely celebrated festivals in the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The word Deepavali means “a row of lights,” and the festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, and good over evil. In Telugu tradition, Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after his victory over Ravana, as well as the triumph of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura — hence, the festival begins with Naraka Chaturdashi, followed by Lakshmi Puja and celebrations with lamps and fireworks. Homes are cleaned, decorated with deepams (oil lamps) and rangoli (muggulu), and families come together to share traditional sweets and festive meals. The lighting of lamps is believed to invite Goddess Lakshmi, the bringer of prosperity and fortune, into every household. In many Telugu homes, people also perform Govardhana Puja and Bali Padyami rituals in the following days. Diwali thus unites communities in a spirit of joy, renewal, and devotion, reflecting the region’s rich cultural heritage and deep spiritual values.
